Jo Yuen Dance Instructor Learn about Jo Andy Firth Dance Instructor Learn about Andy Derek Carruthers Dance Instructor Learn about Derek Jo Yuen Instructor – North Sydney Way back in 2008, Jo went to her first Swing class and has been hooked ever since! A long time jazz fan, what started with a love of the music quickly developed into a passion for the dance and a real appreciation for our wonderful community of swing dancers. Soon she was finding every opportunity to travel Australia for dancing and was a member of the Harbour City Hoppers performance troupe for several years. She started teaching in 2015 and focuses on making the class FUN – she doesn’t believe that any one “can’t” dance – just that they haven’t learned yet! She really loves helping people relax, find their own styles, and feel the joy of Swing dancing. In 2010 she discovered Blues dancing and now shares her love equally between Swing and Blues. Together with her partner Andy Firth they have travelled around Australia and the world learning and dancing Blues – a real highlight was winning a coveted place at the 2017 Blues Experiment in the USA. Jo really loves exploring connection, flow and momentum in dance, and how you can bring your personality and creativity to the floor. She’s always looking to “bring some sass” and a sense of fun and playfulness to everything she does and she loves to be asked to dance! Andy Firth Instructor – North Sydney After a challenge from a friend (also a dancer), Andy went to his first class – by himself – in 2010 and has been Swing dancing ever since. Although those first few classes were a challenge for his two left feet, Andy kept going, simply because it made him happy. The music, the people, the enthusiasm of the teachers, the joy of just dancing- there’s really nothing he doesn’t like about Swing. Fast forward, Andy now gets to share that passion by teaching others the joy that is dancing, be it Swing or Blues. “Relax and have fun!”, a phrase you’ll hear him repeat again and again. And that’s because it should be! He’ll remind you too that it’s not an art of perfection, but an activity and journey of enjoyment. Along the way Andy discovered Blues, and met his partner Jo Yuen. Now he splits his time between both early African-American dance forms. With Jo, he has travelled to Asia and the USA to attend variouse dance exchanges, including to the USA in 2017 as attendees of the Blues Experiment. “Dancing really makes me happy, and Swing Patrol helped me achieve that. I don’t want to be the best dancer in the room, I want to be having the most fun! It’s not about the number of moves you learn or wowing your partner with technique, not for me, but making sure we both enjoy the moment and walk away with smiles on our faces.”
<thumbnail_url>https://swingpatrol.com/sydney/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2023/02/jo-swing-patrol-1024x961.jpg</thumbnail_url></oembed>
