In conjunction with out Safe Spaces policy, our Code of Conduct also highlights what we expect of people at our classes, workshops, events, venues and anywhere where Swing Patrol operates. Safe Spaces Policy and Procedure Physical assault, sexual assault, and harassment are criminal offences.Swing Patrol will fully support anyone who chooses to make a report to the police. How to make a report If something has happened that concerns you — whether at an event or elsewhere — please don’t hesitate to speak up. A report can be made by anyone: a student, dancer, volunteer, observer, or teacher. Speak to any Swing Patrol team member at an event — a teacher, door person, volunteer, or DJ. Contact our director and Safe Spaces Manager, Scott Cupit, directly by email, phone, or text (details below). Reports can be made in person, by phone, text, or email — whatever feels most comfortable for you. You may choose not to name the person involved, though it does make it harder for us to take action. We understand, and will work with whatever you’re comfortable sharing. A report can also be made on your behalf by a friend or family member — someone you trust. All reports are treated seriously, respectfully, confidentially and with discretion. What happens after you make a report Whoever receives your report will listen carefully, note the details, and make sure it reaches the right person. Here’s what you can expect: At the class/event: if the incident just happened and the person responsible is still there, a team member may speak with them informally, issue a verbal warning, or ask them to leave. Details of the incident and any subsequent action will be passed on to Swing Patrol Director, Scott Cupit. After the class/event: if the incident you are reporting happened previously or elsewhere, the person you reported to will pass this on to Swing Patrol Director, Scott Cupit to determine the appropriate course of action. The person you make the report to will listen to what you have to say, take note of details, take note of names and contact information. You may be asked for further information/clarification. You may choose to omit names, but of course it’s much more difficult to take action on any inappropriate behaviour if we don’t know who is responsible. A note on support: our team members are fellow dancers doing their best — they’re not necessarily trained counsellors or qualified legal professionals. They will always do their best to listen and support you, and can connect you with professional resources if needed. We do our best to treat everyone with respect and decency, and provide a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. What Actions might be taken There’s no single response that fits every situation. Scott Cupit will talk to all parties (where named), gathering more information. A variety of actions might be taken, depending on the situation and circumstances. The aim is to look after everyone’s safety, and where possible, help people change behaviour with dignity and integrity. What happens when I report something? The person you make the report to will listen to what you have to say, take note of details, take note of names and contact information. You may be asked for further information/clarification. You may choose to omit names, but of course it’s much more difficult to take action on any inappropriate behaviour if we don’t know who is responsible. The person you make the report to will do their best to support and comfort you. Swing Patrol team members are usually not trained counsellors, nor qualified legal professionals.
