Back ground: Balboa is a partnered swing dance that developed in Southern California in the 1920s–1930s, especially in crowded dance halls where there wasn’t much room to move. It is known for its close connection, subtle, intricate footwork, and often danced to fast tempos. Dancing Balboa can feel like you are gliding across the floor. Balboa has had an incredible renaissance globally and is now danced in most cities that have swing dancing.
The are two forms of Balboa – Pure Balboa, in which dancers stay in closed position the entire time; and Bal-Swing, a later development that mixes Pure Balboa with more open movements inspired by other swing dances. Balboa emerged in crowded venues such as the Balboa Pavilion and the Rendezvous Ballroom, where dancers needed a style that worked in tight spaces. Over time it became a distinctive genre of swing dancing.
